HOW MANY TILES ARE TOO MANY IN A BATHROOM?

Let's be honest… choosing bathroom tiles can send you down a rabbit hole FAST.

Should everything match? Can you mix colours? Is one tile playing it too safe… and is five totally OTT?

Here's what we've learned after years of renovating: some of the most beautiful bathrooms we've ever created use multiple tile styles. The secret isn't sticking to one "safe" choice — it's knowing how to make your tiles play nicely together to achieve a look you love.

For our latest bathroom transformation, we layered a gorgeous combo of tiles from Amber to create a space that feels calm and classic. Just what our vision board ordered!

We didn't just choose different tiles — we gave each one a job. Here's how it all came together.

1) START WITH YOUR MAIN TILE

Think of your main tile as the foundation of the room. It's the tile that covers the largest surface area and sets the overall tone for the space, so you want something that will quietly support the rest of the design rather than compete with it.

It's also where most of your tile budget will go, so choosing a well-priced option here can free you up to splurge on those special feature moments elsewhere.

For this bathroom, we chose Amber's Lava Tile in Bianco across the wet-area walls and floors. Its soft, natural stone look creates a calm, timeless backdrop that allows the other tiles in the space to shine.

It gives you all the beauty of natural stone, with subtle veining, but because it's porcelain, it's durable, low-maintenance and non-slip underfoot. No sealing, no special cleaners — just a beautiful bathroom that's easy to look after. Win-win!

2) ADD YOUR Supporting Tile

Once you've locked in the main tile, it's time for the fun part: introducing a supporting tile.

Think of it like fries with your burger. The burger does the heavy lifting, but the meal wouldn't be nearly as satisfying without them. 😏

This is the step that makes a lot of renovators nervous, but trust us, when it's done well, a second tile can take your bathroom from lovely to seriously luxe.

In this bathroom, we paired the soft Lava Tile in Bianco with Amber's Ombra Marble tile in a gorgeous moody blue. Used as a checkerboard detail across the floor, it creates a beautiful sense of rhythm underfoot while grounding the lighter tile.

What we love most about the Ombra Marble tiles is the tumbled finish. It softens the colour and gives the tile an aged, collected feel that looks like it's always belonged there.

The lesson here: contrast is your friend. The best tile combinations don't match perfectly. They complement each other. Every tile should bring something different to the story.

3) AND SAVED THE Boldest Tile for the Hero Moment

Here's a design secret: your boldest tile will have the BIGGEST impact when it's used the least.

If every tile is competing for attention, the room can start to feel busy. Instead, choose one hero tile and let it have its moment.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is renovators trying to create too many focal points. Instead, choose one special tile and give it dedicated space to shine.

For this bathroom, that was Amber's stunning Sora Finger Mosaic in Powder Blue Gloss.

From day one, we knew the arches around the bath and shower were going to be the heroes of this space. They were a key part of our vision, so rather than fighting for attention with more feature moments, we used the mosaic tile to celebrate them.

Wrapping the arches and continuing the tile as a feature band through the wet area draws your eye exactly where we want it to go, while creating a beautiful sense of flow throughout the room.

A little goes a long way, and that's exactly the point. The glossy finish, gorgeous blue tone and Kit Kat shape add just the right amount of personality without overwhelming the space.

It's the tile equivalent of the perfect statement earring. Wear one pair. Not your whole jewellery box.

So, How Many Tiles Are Too Many?

While there's no hard-and-fast rule, we've found three is often the sweet spot: a main tile, a supporting tile and a hero tile.

It gives you enough variety to create interest, contrast and personality without tipping into visual chaos.

In this bathroom, each tile had a clear role to play. The main tile creates a calm foundation, the supporting tile adds depth and character, and the feature tile highlights the room's architectural details.

Three different tile styles working together to create a space that feels layered and interesting while still maintaining the calm, classic feel we were aiming for.

Could you use more? Sure. But if every tile is trying to be the star of the show, the room can quickly start to feel busy.

The secret isn't using fewer tiles. It's making sure every tile has a purpose.
