WHAT WE DID TO BRING WOW FACTOR TO THE BOYS' WORLD

When your boys are besties and want to sleep not just in the same room, but in the same bed, why not throw them in together and create a ‘Boys’ World’? #doubletrouble

Tucked away at the end of the hallway, the Boys’ World is a special zone just for the boys of this house, with their own bedroom, bathroom and loft. We wanted to make this a space that they’ll love now and in the future. Here’s how we added some wow factor:

BOLD COLOURS

We’re all for gender neutrality but these boys love blue and wanted a blue room. It was important that we chose the right blue that will stand the test of time and used it in the right places to bring a pop of WOW.

Bonnie loves a feature ceiling (check out the ones we did at House 11 and House 12) and kids’ rooms are the perfect place to have some fun and add some quirky colour. Just remember that statement ceilings work best on high ceilings - if you have a standard ceiling height, like 2400mm, we probably wouldn’t go there.

In this room, the ceilings are nice and high and we wanted a bold blue but not a vibrant navy… something a bit dirtier and not so dark. Of all our sample pots, Dulux Blue Metal was the winner and we used it not only on the ceiling and cornices (like we have before) but also on those big Mumma skirting boards from Intrim. As if they weren’t chunky enough at a whopping 285cm high, we painted them Blue Metal too to further accentuate them. We’re loving the combo of the blue horizontal lines of the skirts with the fresh white Axon vertical cladding by James Hardie, on the walls. It’s cool but it’s classic.

DOUBLE DOORS

Nothing says “big bedroom” like a double door entry. From the hallway, the doors look like the rest of the glorious Parkwood louvre doors we’ve used throughout the house, painted white in Dulux Lexicon. From inside the bedroom, they’re the same striking 'Blue Metal’ as the ceiling and trims with brass hardware by Domino.

BIG BEDS

Even though these little boys choose to sleep together at the moment, we’ve future-proofed their room by adding two queen size beds that will stand the test of time.

And look at that bed head… it’s our biggest to date! It was custom made for this space by the clever peeps at Create Estate (who you might remember from our statement bedhead at House 12.) The classic stripes will transcend years and kids’ ages and stripes go with EVERYTHING so mixing up the bed linen won’t be a problem in years to come.

THE RUG

Who would have thought it but Bonnie’s called the rug a ‘wow moment’ in this room! A rug? Yes, you read right!

It’s the size and scale of this massive Benisouk rug that ties the two distinct halves of the room, created by the big beds, together.

DOUBLE ROBE

Each boy has their own side of a wardrobe with plenty of room for storage which can fluctuate as they grow up. There’s room for a chest of drawers, should they need more storage down the track and room for hanging hats and jackets. It’s a space that can grow with them.

THE ENSUITE

From a survey of our office staff, it turns out that even older boys don’t need much bathroom storage space, so we decided to forgo a vanity in this bathroom and choose a gorgeous pedestal sink instead, with a mirrored shaving cabinet above.

Don’t get Lana started about the urinal… but Bonnie and Louisa (with 6 boys between them!) think it’s a fabulous feature of a boys’ bathroom and the fact it has a sensor flush is even better.

The hero of the ensuite has to be the shower. It just speaks for itself! The arch, the tiles, the tapware… we want to shower here every day ourselves.

THE LOFT

The final (and the boys’ favourite!) WOW is the stairway to little boy heaven in the corner of the room. It leads to a loft space that’s filled with couches and cushions for days and a whopping great LG TV.

Florence Broadhurst feature wallpaper was a great way to bring interest and texture to this room, in addition to the rattan furniture, chunky woven rug and sofas in different colours.
