IT’S 2023! IS THIS THE YEAR FOR YOUR NEW HOME?

A new home

And just like that, we’ve flipped the page to another new year. What’s on the cards for you in 2023?

If you’re thinking of renovating or building this year and you haven’t already got your plans locked and loaded, don’t leave it a minute longer! Prior planning prevents poor performance… and in the case of planning your dream home, it might be the difference between loving or loathing where you live.

Read these three quick tips to help get your dream home journey on the road…

1) IT ALL STARTS WITH YOUR VISION BOARD

Every single one of our projects starts in the same way - with a vision board. It’s the most accurate glimpse you’ll get of your dream home before committing to plans and renders and kicking off the entire renovation process.

How your home feels is just as important as how it looks - and that’s what makes the difference between a regular mood board and our vision boards. We add words to bring the feelings to life, along with images to create a concise vision for your new home. And don’t forget your #cleverhashtag to summarise your vision and make it easy to track your progress pics.

Collecting inspiration by pinning or saving pics (or ripping them from a mag) as you find them makes it easier to pull together your favourite inspo images when it comes time to create your board. If you’ve got even a faint inkling of renovating or building your home, then NOW is the time to start being inspired by styles and feels you love.

We know it’s tempting to jump right in and start making decisions straight away but our best advice is to back up the truck and don’t start moving again until your vision board is done and dusted. We promise you’ll thank us later!

2) GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW

First things first. Your budget. Sadly, no budget means no dream home so you’ll need a rough idea early in the process of how much you can afford (or want) to spend on improving your home. Is your ballpark $5k, $50k or $500k? There’s a good chance you’re not sure how much that money will buy you, and that’s totally fine, (we can help you work that out later) – but it’s still good to start with a ballpark figure in mind.

From our real reno experience, combined with the numbers from the construction industry, an average good quality home renovation in Australia costs between A$2000-$3000 per sqm to well above A$4,000+ for high-end homes with high-end finishes. The sky is the limit at this end of the spectrum! Of course, these figures vary from state to state and with the current economic situation, product, freight and labour costs have increased across the board.

3) SHARPEN YOUR TOOLS

Not the literal kind! We leave that to the pro’s. When we talk about your reno tool kit, we’re talking about the knowledge and skills you’ll need to help you design, budget and manage your dream home renovation or build.

When we started renovating houses, Erin and Lana had no renovating experience so we relied on Bonnie’s knowledge (and a whole lot of winging it!) to complete our first project. Since then, we’ve been transforming a few houses every year and each one of them has presented an opportunity to learn something new. We’re onto our 16th house now and we’re still planning and learning every step of the way. We often say that “we’ve made the mistakes, so you don’t have to” … and it’s true! We share all of them in our course Three Birds Reno School – the ultimate online course for anyone planning a renovation or new build.

In Reno School, we teach you how to renovate or build your dream home based on our years of experience to fast-track your knowledge, build your confidence and get you ready to reno. And what better time to do this than NOW? We currently have over 20,000 Reno School students and graduates and guess what one of the most common pieces of feedback we get from them is?
