HOW SOON IS TOO SOON TO PLAN A RENOVATION?

If your tea leaves are telling you that a renovation (or a new build) is in your future you might be wondering when is the right time to start planning?

Whether you’re thinking of renovating or building in a year (or several years, as it was in Bonnie’s case!) we don’t think it’s really ever too soon to start. By planning your dream home early you’re not committing yourself, financially or otherwise, but you’re setting yourself up for success when it comes time to start.

RENO DREAMING

5+ YEARS FROM THE START DATE YOU CAN:

Start dreaming & pinning to your heart’s content.

Dreams are free, right? So even if your reno is still in the dreaming stage, we’re all about dreaming the dream. Whether it’s all in your head, pinned over eleventy million Pinterest boards or jotted on paper… what better way to start to manifest your dream home to life!

At this stage, you might have bought your future dream home or block of land or you might still be manifesting a future purchase - and that’s ok too!

Bonnie started dreaming of her Dream Home over a decade before the slab of her Modern Coastal Barn was poured. Once they’d found the perfect block of land, she and her family lived in the original (termite ridden) house for four years to get a good idea of how they used the space, how the light falls and how best to utilise the land. Bon then spent another two years going backwards and forwards with the architect, throwing around different plans and ideas.

 RENO PLANNING

12+ MONTHS FROM THE START DATE YOU CAN:

Nail your vision, engage the experts & complete Three Birds Reno School.

At least 12 months out is the perfect time to start planning your upcoming renovation or new build. The bigger the project, the more time you’ll likely need but 12 months is a realistic time period to get to work creating your vision, budgeting, and planning to within an inch of your life!

Of course, there’s no harm in starting sooner but if you’re committed to renovating or building, don’t leave it too late. We have plenty of Reno School students who join without a live project but gain so much from being a member of the Reno School Community and have the benefit of lifetime access to the course to retake it as often as they wish.

Now’s your chance to make sure you #nailit (not #failit) by planning all the little details - to investigate, research and learn about every aspect of your renovation.

If Reno School is on your radar (if not, why not?!) now’s the perfect time to complete the course. You’re right in the sweet spot of planning for your dream home and we have a step-by-step process to make it happen.

Here’s what you’ll learn over 6 weeks in Reno School:

1) How to build your master plan - Regardless of your past experience, this module teaches you the foundations of every good reno or new build – planning! We’ll help you suss out your budget, priorities, and any approvals you’ll need. And last, but not least, we’ll help you answer that all-important question: should you renovate or detonate?

2) Where to find your Dream Team - Behind every successful renovator is her crew. This module teaches you how to find your perfect tradies, and how to make sure you’re getting the best quotes (and not getting ripped off!)

3) How to create ah-mazing interiors - This module is where Bonnie downloads everything in her head and heart to do with interiors. It's time to turn your vision board into a reality, so get ready to immerse yourself in a vision board bonanza and colour wheel extravaganza as we guide you through an easy 6-step design process.

4) How to master your kitchens - Because we know kitchens are at the top of many people’s reno wish list, this room gets a whole week to itself! We’ll show you how to design the ideal layout, choose the right benchtop, appliances, cabinets and handles. We’ll also dissect all the kitchens we’ve done and point out their best features so you can incorporate them into your own design

5) How to create beautiful bathrooms & laundries - Bathrooms and laundries shouldn’t be hidden away! Learn how to design gorgeous and functional rooms that you’ll want to show off – and that will suit your family’s needs while standing the test of time.

6) How to transform your home’s exterior - No one wants a drab exterior, especially when they’ve done such a gorgeous reno inside! Boost your home’s curb appeal, see if your roof needs a refresh, and implement our tips to makeover your alfresco.

We currently have over 20,000 Reno School students and graduates and guess what one of the most common pieces of feedback we get from them is?

“I wish I’d done it sooner!”

There’s really no way you can over-plan a reno (or new build).
