7 SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME FEEL WARMER FOR WINTER

Cosy season is creeping in, and honestly, we're not mad about it.

There's always that shift this time of year. The mornings feel darker, the air has a little chill, and suddenly staying in sounds way better than going out. It's candles over cocktails, throws over tan lines, and slower evenings at home. The winter wardrobe makes its glorious return.

And instead of resisting it, we're leaning all the way in.

Because winter is actually the perfect excuse to give your home a little styling refresh — to make it feel warmer, softer and more inviting, without renovating a single thing.

Let’s cosy things up, shall we?

1) SWITCH UP YOUR BEDDING

If your bed still feels like summer, it's never going to give you that cosy winter feeling.

This is one of the fastest ways to make your whole home feel warmer. A winter bed should look full, soft and completely irresistible — the kind of bed you think about all day and can't wait to dive into at night.

Start with a heavier doona, then add a quilt or coverlet at the end so it feels relaxed and inviting, and pile on the pillows for ultimate plushness. Warmer fabrics like linen or brushed cotton will help create that cocooned, can't-get-out-of-bed feeling.

One trick we swear by: size up your doona. If you've got a queen bed, go for a king doona. It guarantees that gorgeous overhang on both sides — no sad exposed mattress edges in sight.

And if you really want to go all in, try styling with two doonas. Lay one flat as normal, then fold the second in half or thirds across the bottom of the bed. It looks incredibly luxurious, adds that coveted extra volume and gives you an extra layer of warmth when you need it most. Once you try it, you'll never go back.

It's not just about staying warm. It's about that little end-of-day moment where climbing into bed feels like an actual treat.

Follow these easy steps to style your bedroom to perfection.

2) LAYER YOUR SOFA SO IT INVITE YOU TO SIT

Your sofa should feel just as inviting as your bed. If it doesn't, something's missing.

Usually, it just needs more layers. A couple of cushions in different textures and a throw casually draped over the arm can completely change the vibe. It doesn't have to be perfect — you want it to feel lived-in and easy, not like a hotel lobby.

The magic is in the mix. Something soft next to something a bit more structured, a textured fabric against something smooth. That contrast is what makes a sofa feel warm before you've even sat down.

Not sure how many cushions you actually need? For a smaller sofa, three is the sweet spot — two at one end, one at the other. For a medium sofa, four works beautifully — two at each end. Easy. And for a large L-shape, you can go up to six, clustered at one end and in the corner.

When it comes to cushions, refer back to your colour palette and mix up your textures — a velvet cushion adds a touch of luxury, a chunky knit brings that cosy winter feel, and a pop of a warmer tone can tie the whole look together.

When it's right, it's the spot everyone gravitates to without even thinking about it.

3) WARM UP YOUR FLOORS

Cold floors can undo all your good work in seconds.

A good rug instantly makes a space feel softer, warmer and more pulled together. In living areas, going slightly bigger than you think almost always looks better — and feels better too. It anchors everything and stops the room from feeling a bit floaty.

When it comes to sizing, we look for a rug that's big enough to sit at least partially under the legs of the sofa and any occasional chairs. If you can get 30cm of rug under a leg, that's the sweet spot — but we'd settle for less. The key thing to avoid is rug so small that it just floats in the middle of the room like an island.

Can't find one big enough? Try overlapping two smaller rugs. They don't even need to match — they just need to complement each other. It looks completely intentional, adds amazing texture and is often much kinder on the budget. Win, win, win.

And yes, even the bathroom deserves some love. A soft, washable rug where you step out of the shower on a cold morning is one of those small luxuries that makes a surprisingly big difference.

It's simple, but you'll notice it every single day.

4) SHIFT YOUR COLOUR PALETTE

You don’t need to repaint your whole house to make it feel cosy.

It’s more about what you bring in. Swapping lighter pieces for warmer tones can completely change the mood of a room. Terracotta, rust, chocolate and deep greens are some of our faves at the moment. All those rich, comforting colours that feel a little bit indulgent.

They soak up the light instead of bouncing it around, which makes everything feel softer and more relaxed.

Even just changing out a few cushions or adding a throw can be enough to shift the whole space.

5) GET THE LIGHT RIGHT

If your home doesn’t feel quite right at night, lighting is almost always the culprit.

Overhead lights can feel harsh once the sun goes down. They flatten everything and quietly kill that cosy feeling you're trying so hard to create.

Switching to lamps changes everything. A floor lamp in the corner, a table lamp near the sofa, maybe a candle or two flickering away — suddenly the room feels softer, warmer and a lot more inviting.

Think of your light fittings as pieces of art — because that's exactly what they are. The right pendant or floor lamp doesn't just light a room, it adds height, visual balance and a serious style moment. Choose well, and it does as much heavy lifting as any piece of furniture.

It's less about how bright the space is and more about how it feels.

One little upgrade that makes a BIG difference is your light bulb colour. Swap cool white globes for warm ones and suddenly everything — and everyone — looks better.

6) CLOSE THE CURTAINS AND KEEP THE WARMTH IN

This one costs nothing and takes about ten seconds. But don't underestimate it.

Closing your curtains before it gets dark helps keep the warmth inside and the chill out. If you've got the option, layering a sheer with a heavier fabric — like linen or velvet — adds both softness and insulation.

But it's not just practical. It also changes the feeling of the room. Everything starts to feel a bit more enclosed, a bit more protected from the outside world.

That's when the cosy really kicks in.

7) USE SCENT TO ADD THAT FINAL LAYER

Scent is one of those things you don't always notice straight away, but it changes how your home feels the moment you walk in the door.

In winter, we naturally lean towards deeper, warmer fragrances. Cedarwood, amber, clove, and vanilla are gorgeous scents for winter - basically anything that smells like a warm hug.

Lighting a candle or setting a diffuser becomes part of your evening rhythm. It sits quietly in the background, but it helps your home feel calm, welcoming and completely settled.

It's the finishing touch that pulls everything together. And once you have it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
